MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former spy chief Fahad Yasin, the incumbent President’s right-hand man, has taken steps to rig an upcoming vote for a parliament seat in his favor, a rival candidate said on Sunday.

Khalid Muhammad Gabane told a press conference in Mogadishu that Hirshabelle authorities and the electoral body were playing a role in Mr. Yasin’s efforts to sweep himself to victory and keep potential challengers at bay from the parliamentary seat.

He is running for the HOP086 seat whose election is scheduled to be held in the town of Baladwayne, weeks after Villa Somalia had airlifted hundreds of fresh troops to the restive town to quash opposition against a visit by the regional president.

Fahad Yasin, who is also competing to hold the position of deputy speaker of parliament after grabbing the parliamentary seat in Baladwayne, has prepared dozens of soldiers who are expected to vote for him as delegates in an upcoming election, according to his rival candidate, who says he and several other challengers have been blocking from running against him.

The outgoing deputy speaker of parliament Abdiweli Mudey has been barred from boarding a flight to the town of Barawe on Sunday over attempts to block him from seeking re-election.
