Somalia’s new spy chief Mahad Salad Mohamed on Monday appointed Muhyadin Warba’ Shador as the new NISA head of the capital Mogadishu, just a day after taking charge.

The appointment followed reports that Mr Salad was seeking to shake up the agency which had been mired in a number of scandals over the past five years during the tenure of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Once an opposition MP who was critic of Farmajo and former intelligence boss, Mahad Salad is also reportedly planning to change the name of the agency from National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) to Federal Intelligence and Security Agency (FISA). Though it is unclear if the name change will make a difference in the security institution which authorities want to be at the heart of the fight against insurgents.
