MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the Arab League Summit in Algiers, his office said on Wednesday, weeks after reports emerged of ongoing secret Egyptian recruitment of thousands of Somali youths.

The Somali president’s office tweeted that the two discussed the fight against terrorism and Egypt’s role in advancing regional peace.

The meeting came weeks after Egypt had begun recruiting thousands of Somali youths. Cairo has sent some youths to training camps in Egypt where they are set to receive military training.

Somali authorities have not yet commented on the clandestine training at a time thousands of soldiers, who completed training in Eritrea, are still missing. Egypt’s intention to recruit and train the youths has not yet been clear, and whether it will use them as proxies to advance its interests amid escalating tensions with Ethiopia.
